Secretary Hegseth Announces Defense Partnership with Indonesia

The framework provides the U.S. access while shoring up Indonesian defenses and capabilities.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth hosted Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin at the Pentagon this week, during which the two defense leaders formally established a Major Defense Cooperation Partnership.

The cooperation agreement framework allows Indonesia to maintain its “free and active” foreign policy, so that nation may engage in partnerships with Australia, China, and Russia, as well as the U.S. The main focuses of the agreement include military modernization and increased capacity, training and military education, and exercises with operational coordination. It also provides the U.S. blanket overflight access.

“Secretary Hegseth commended Indonesia for participating in the Board of Peace and playing a leading role in the International Stabilization Force,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell stated. “The leaders reaffirmed the vital and growing defense relationship and discussed a range of shared goals, including increasing special forces training and professional military education.”

The spokesman added, “The two leaders committed to expanding the scope and complexity of bilateral and multilateral exercises, such as SUPER GARUDA SHIELD, to strengthen collective capabilities and promote Peace through Strength.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Secretary Hegseth as he engages in partnerships and agreements with foreign defense ministers.
  • For U.S. defense officials as they implement cooperation frameworks and coordinate military training and education.
